Have you ever taken your bath with a cold water? How did you feel at first, when the water touches your skin? Of course, you’d feel so cold and wish to skip the day’s bath. But do you notice that after some time while finally bathing, you won’t feel as cold and scared as you were before? At that moment, your body has temporarily Adapted.

In like manner, while moving to a new school, you may feel rather like an alien amongst humans. Thoughts of "how will I ever adapt to this new school" may flood your mind. Well, know that it’s a normal way to feel while in the mist of new faces. And here in this article, I’ll be giving you clues to easily adapt and get used to the system in your new school.

From a student, Jane:

Moving to a new school was a hard pill swallow, it came so sudden and I find that quite annoying. Various thoughts occupied my head, “I mean how will I cope with them, I don’t think they can be as cool as my friends, mum, I’m not good at making new friends, I’m never gonna like that school!”

“Jane it’s okay, it’s not going to be as bad as you think, just give it a try and you’ll see” mum encouraged me and at least, it gave a spark of positivity in my mind. I had no choice. Later, I was enrolled.

Well, I’ve spent two years now. Guess mum’s right. I've made really loving friends and I felt like I didn’t change school at all.

What does it mean to adapt to a new school?

To adapt or blend to a new school simply means to get familiar to the life of the new school, just as you’ve done in your previous one.

So how can I adapt to my new school?

Develop a positive mindset:

Having a positive mindset has always been an effective tool in dealing with any challenge in life. What it does is that It makes you see the good side things, especially bad things.

Instead of having a mindset of “that school will definitely suck, I’m never gonna like it” why not have a mindset of “well, at least I’ll make up for where I failed in my previous school”- this is a positive mindset and when your mind is set like this, adapting or blending will be quite easy. So when moving to that new school, be sure to be positive-minded driven. It goes a long way.

• Try talking to someone:

I could remember when I was enrolled into a new school. I didn’t want to talk to anyone. But later during the day, it dawned on me that I badly need to talk to someone – my bladder couldn’t hold it much longer, I need a restroom! “hey, can you show me the restroom?” I asked the boy beside me, “sure”.

After a successful pee, I took a sigh of relief. “what if I hadn’t talk? Who knows? I’d have probably peed on my pant”, I said to myself as I walked back to class. Also, talking to him made me a bit familiar with the school as I now know where the restroom is, at least. - From John, a student.

A rather funny experience from him. It has simply proved how talking to someone can help one to easily adapt to a new school.

• Be involved in class activities:

Don’t just remain quiet during teaching often and often. It won’t help as a new student. Here’s what you should do instead:

- Ask questions regarding the topic being taught.

- Raise useful suggestions.

- Do assignments.

- Teach others who need your help. Etc.

Doing all these will tend to carry you along and before you know it, you’ll begin to adapt or get familiar with the school.

• Join school clubs:

Schools often have various clubs like the red cross, student government, drama club, speech and debate club, science club, boys and girls scouts as well as brigades and so on.

Joining some of these clubs will quickly help you to adapt to your new school as you’ll definitely interact with other students in any of the clubs. An example is the speech and debate club. Before you begin to debate on any topic, you’ll all have to meet and practice your speech. From there, you’ll get to know some of them and probably, start to make friends.

Give yourself time:

Adapting or getting familiar with your new school is not an overnight achievement. It requires time. Take a flash back to when you first resumed to your previous school, did you just adapt and make friends on your first day? Of course not. So, in the course of getting familiar with the school, make sure you give yourself time.

 know certain things:

During your first days at your new school, be sure to have someone show you around the school, tell you the school rules etc, perhaps, your teacher or the class representative. And when they do, be sure to know:

- Where the cafeteria is.

- Where the various labs are.

- Where the sport centres are.

- Where your various classes hold.

- Where the notice board is. Etc.

Also, know the school views concerning:

- The use of smart phones.

- The time students ought to be in school.

- How students should dress. And so on.

So to conclude this article, I’ll want you to know this:
